| Toph is the only child of the wealthy Bei Fong family. Her life was that of a pampered heiress, coddled and kept tucked away from the rest of the world... and she hated it. Blind since birth, Toph has never had trouble seeing. She "sees with her feet," her natural skill as an earthbender enabling her to read vibrations in the ground and tell her where everything is, from ants to people to furniture. Secretly, she learned earthbending from badgermoles, far surpassing the basics her parents and teacher had permitted her to learn. She entered earthbending tournaments in disguise, under the name "The Blind Bandit," a blind little girl defeating strong grown men. The secret of her abilities was shattered when Avatar Aang and his friends discovered the Blind Bandit’s true identity and pursued her to her home, wanting her to be Aang’s earthbending teacher. She refused, but when Aang was in trouble, Toph used earthbending to help him, fighting off all her tournament opponents at once and revealing her abilities to her father. Her parents, rather than realizing from this demonstration that Toph could take care of herself, took the opposite stand, saying that they’d given her too much freedom. The result? Toph ran away with the Avatar’s group. There were several arguments within the group, primarily between Katara and Toph, and at one point Toph actually left them. After an encounter with Iroh and some good advice, Toph rejoined Aang and the others, becoming very close friends with Aang, Katara, and Sokka as she trained Aang in earthbending and they worked toward the goal of ending war with the Fire Nation. They suffered a huge defeat at the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se, losing their opportunity to use the Earth King’s army as an invasion force and nearly losing Aang and all their hopes, at the hands of Dai Li earthbenders and Princess Azula and Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation. Their exploits eventually led them to an unsuccessful smaller invasion of the Fire Nation’s main city along with all the allies they could muster. The adults were taken prisoner, but the children escaped to the Western Air Temple. There they were met by Zuko, who rather than trying to kill them, asked to join their group and be Aang’s firebending teacher. There was an accident, Zuko hurting Toph, which made them more determined than ever to avoid him. After this incident though, he helped fight the assassin he'd originally hired to take them out. Toph had just spoken the words, "Go ahead and let 'im join. It'll give me plenty of time to get back at him for burning my feet," her fist lightly punching her palm a few times in anticipation, when she suddenly found herself in a different place... |
